Principal's Message

Clarence Walker

Dear SOFA Parents, Families, and Friends,

Welcome to the 2023 – 2024 school year. I am so thrilled to welcome all of our returning and new families to the School of Fine Arts. This year is going to be a very exciting year of teaching, learning, and growing. The middle school years can seem to be intimidating to both students and parents. However, the middle school years provide acquisitions of new skills, as well as a time of transformation between elementary school and high school. We will enter this new school year with a great commitment to increase student knowledge and promote a positive school climate.

The School of Fine Arts is committed to providing a safe, collaborative and dynamic learning community that empowers and challenges our students to become lifelong learners. The theme this school year is ‘Let’s Do More in ’24.” We made great strides in learning and achievement last school year. We have gained great momentum in learning through the strong teaching practices that we have adopted. It is time for us to continue to move that momentum higher and higher. We can accomplish this by Doing More, Learning more, Achieving more, and Growing more. By building collaborative relationships with parents, families, and community partners we will do more. Our students will gain confidence in meeting their academic and social goals as we continue to educate the whole child.

We are happy to announce that we have adopted and will implement a new math curriculum, I Ready Math. We will continue to provide students with opportunities to address their social emotional needs, academic deficiencies and build their numeracy and literacy skills.

The School of Fine Arts begin a parent and teacher organization (PTO) this school year. We realize that we cannot do the work we have to do without the efforts of our parents. Parents are very valuable to our school. Therefore, if you are interested in supporting our school as part of the PTO, please reach out to our main office.

We are also pleased to inform you that Dolton School District 149 will continue the implementation of the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), an option available to schools participating in the National School Lunch and School Breakfast programs, for 2023-2024 school year. Schools that participate in CEP are able to provide healthy breakfasts and lunches each day at no charge for all students enrolled in that CEP school.

On Saturday, August 5, 2023, District 149 will be hosting a Back to School “Lotta Palooza” at Caroline Sibley School located 1550 Sibley Blvd, Calumet City, IL 60409 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. We are looking forward to seeing our families attend this spectacular event.

Remember, school begins Wednesday, August 16, 2023 at 8:20 a.m.  This will be a full day of school beginning at 8:20 a.m. and dismissing at 2:50 p.m. Students will be required to wear a black polo style shirt and khaki pants. Enclosed you will find an information verification form, transportation form, school supply list, and your child’s schedule. Please check the information verification for accuracy, and make changes if needed.  Please bring both forms to school at your earliest convenience on or before August 16, 2023.  You may also fax your forms to 708- 868-7589 or scan and email them to my administrative assistant Ms. Kimberly Eldridge at  We also ask that every parent update their email addresses and phone numbers to make communication easy for all.

This year at the School of Fine Arts, we will continue to encourage all children to embrace the district’s values of “Excellence, Humanization and Pride" in their daily choices and interactions. We want to create a culture of respect for ourselves, our peers, our school, and our community. We look forwarded to a positive and productive year.

Yours in Service,

Mrs. Christal Washington
